Sony Confirms Live-Service Games Will Remain a Key Part of PlayStation’s Future
Despite several high-profile setbacks in the live-service market, Sony has confirmed that it has no plans to abandon the genre. PlayStation executive Hermen Hulst recently stated that live-service games will continue to play an important role in the company's long-term strategy, even as Sony remains committed to delivering the single-player experiences that made PlayStation famous.

According to Hulst, live-service titles attract millions of players worldwide and help expand the PlayStation ecosystem. While recent projects have faced significant challenges, successful games like Helldivers 2, Gran Turismo 7, and MLB The Show demonstrate that the model can still achieve long-term success when supported with quality content and regular updates. Sony believes these games complement, rather than replace, its blockbuster story-driven releases.
The announcement comes during a difficult period for PlayStation Studios. Sony recently confirmed major layoffs at Bungie, affecting a significant number of employees as part of a company-wide restructuring. Even so, the publisher emphasized that Marathon remains an important project within its portfolio, reinforcing its commitment to multiplayer and live-service experiences despite recent industry challenges.
Looking ahead, Sony plans to maintain a balanced lineup that includes both cinematic single-player adventures and online multiplayer games. While the company acknowledges that not every live-service project will succeed, executives believe the genre remains a vital part of PlayStation's future. Fans can therefore expect Sony to continue investing in new live-service titles alongside the narrative-driven exclusives that have defined the PlayStation brand for years.
