The Blood of Dawnwalker's Combat Was Inspired by Max Payne and Guitar Hero — Here's Why It's Nothing Like The Witcher 3

The Blood of Dawnwalker is taking an unexpected approach to combat, and its biggest inspirations aren't other RPGs. According to game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, the team at Rebel Wolves built the game's sword-fighting system around ideas borrowed from Max Payne and Guitar Hero, aiming to create battles that reward skill, timing, and mastery instead of flashy automated animations.

Tomaszkiewicz explained that the comparison to Guitar Hero is all about the learning curve. At first, the directional combat system feels challenging, requiring players to carefully read enemy movements, choose the correct attack direction, and match incoming strikes with precise blocks or parries. Over time, however, those mechanics become instinctive, creating a satisfying rhythm that makes every duel feel more rewarding.

The influence of Max Payne comes from a different philosophy. Tomaszkiewicz said he replayed Remedy's classic shooter multiple times simply because the gameplay felt so enjoyable, and he wanted The Blood of Dawnwalker to achieve the same level of replayability. Rather than relying on cinematic combat sequences, Rebel Wolves wants every encounter to remain engaging thanks to responsive controls, impactful animations, and player skill.

Although many fans expected combat similar to The Witcher 3, the developers insist the new system is much faster and more dynamic. During the day, protagonist Coen fights as a human using directional swordplay, while at night he transforms into a vampire with supernatural abilities that dramatically change both combat and exploration. With its unique mechanics and years of refinement through constant iteration, The Blood of Dawnwalker is aiming to stand apart from traditional action RPGs when it launches on September 3, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
