Half-Life 2 Finally Runs on ReactOS at 60 FPS — Open-Source Windows Alternative Makes Huge Breakthrough

person access_timeToday, 14:53

After decades of development, ReactOS has reached a major milestone by successfully running Half-Life 2 at a stable 60 FPS on a GeForce GTX 960 using legacy NVIDIA Windows drivers. The achievement demonstrates just how far the open-source operating system has progressed, bringing it one step closer to becoming a genuine alternative for running classic Windows games.

The successful test was carried out by community member Aotori Hibiki, who published more than 10 hours of uninterrupted gameplay running on a nightly build of ReactOS. The system used a GeForce GTX 960 together with a legacy NVIDIA graphics driver and hardware-accelerated graphics support, allowing Valve's iconic shooter to run smoothly without major stability issues. For a project that has spent years focusing primarily on Windows compatibility rather than gaming, the result represents a significant technical achievement.

The breakthrough is largely thanks to recent improvements in Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) support inside ReactOS. By expanding compatibility with Windows graphics drivers, the operating system can now take advantage of GPU acceleration that was previously unavailable, making demanding 3D applications and games increasingly viable. While Half-Life 2 is far from a modern AAA title, getting it to run smoothly on real hardware marks an important step forward for the project.

Despite the impressive demonstration, ReactOS is still a long way from replacing Windows for everyday gaming. Many modern games, anti-cheat systems, and newer graphics APIs remain unsupported or only partially functional. Even so, successfully running Half-Life 2 at 60 FPS shows that the project is making steady progress, giving enthusiasts hope that the open-source Windows alternative will continue expanding its gaming capabilities in the years ahead.
