Portal 2 Becomes One of the First Games Rated for Valve’s Steam Frame VR Headset

Although Valve has yet to announce a release date or price for its upcoming Steam Frame headset, the company has quietly begun rolling out Steam Frame compatibility ratings for games on Steam. One of the very first titles to receive a rating is the legendary puzzle game Portal 2, giving fans an early glimpse of how Valve plans to certify software for its next-generation standalone VR platform.

According to information discovered in Steam's database, Portal 2 has been marked as "Playable" rather than "Verified." This means the game is expected to run on Steam Frame but with certain limitations. The primary issue is that the title does not natively support the headset's high per-eye display resolution, which may result in reduced image quality or lower performance compared to fully optimized games. Despite this, Valve considers the experience good enough to earn the Playable certification.

The compatibility rating does not indicate that Portal 2 is receiving an official VR version. Instead, Steam Frame is designed to run both traditional PC games and VR titles using SteamOS, Proton, and additional compatibility technologies that allow x86 Windows games to operate on the headset's ARM-based hardware. As a result, many existing non-VR games may become playable without requiring developers to create dedicated VR ports.

Portal 2 is reportedly one of the first games to enter the new compatibility program, alongside Day of Defeat, which has been labeled Unsupported. The appearance of these ratings suggests Valve is actively preparing its certification system ahead of the Steam Frame launch. While the company has not revealed when the headset will arrive, the introduction of compatibility labels is another strong indication that the platform is moving closer to release.
