Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Is Both Faithful to the Original and a Completely New Experience, Ubisoft Says
Ubisoft believes Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced strikes a rare balance between preserving a beloved classic and delivering a thoroughly modern experience. In a recent interview, technical director Richard Blenkinsop described the remake as "faithful to the original" while also feeling like "a completely new product," thanks to its rebuilt technology, expanded gameplay systems, and extensive quality-of-life improvements.

Rather than simply enhancing textures or increasing the resolution, Black Flag Resynced has been rebuilt from the ground up using the latest version of Ubisoft's Anvil Engine. The remake introduces ray-traced lighting, micropolygon rendering, dynamic weather, seamless world streaming with virtually no loading screens between major locations, and significantly upgraded facial animations and environmental detail. Despite these technical advances, Ubisoft emphasizes that the heart of Edward Kenway's pirate adventure remains untouched.
Gameplay has also evolved without abandoning the identity of the 2013 original. Stealth has been modernized with manual crouching, combat features more responsive parries and refined hit detection, while naval exploration has become smoother thanks to faster transitions between land and sea. Ubisoft has also reworked traditionally frustrating missions, making tailing and stealth objectives less restrictive while preserving the open-world freedom that made the original one of the franchise's most beloved entries. New side quests, hidden locations, and additional story content further expand the Caribbean without rewriting the core narrative.
According to the development team, the goal was never to replace the original Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, but to create the version they would have built if today's technology had been available in 2013. The result is a remake designed to satisfy longtime fans while introducing a new generation of players to one of Ubisoft's most celebrated adventures. Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced launches on July 9, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, marking Ubisoft's first full-scale remake of an Assassin's Creed title.
