Dragon Age Creator Reveals His Vision for the Series’ Future: A Return to Dark Fantasy and Meaningful Choices
David Gaider, the creator of Dragon Age's world and former lead writer at BioWare, has shared what he believes a future installment in the series should look like. Speaking in a recent interview, Gaider said he would like to see the franchise return to its dark fantasy roots, with morally complex storytelling, stronger companion conflicts, and player choices that carry real consequences.

According to Gaider, one of the defining strengths of Dragon Age: Origins was that companions had their own beliefs and were willing to challenge—or even oppose—the player. He argued that party members should not exist simply to support every decision the protagonist makes. Instead, companions should be able to disagree, leave the group, or even become enemies if the player's actions clash with their values. Gaider believes that this tension creates more memorable stories and makes player choices feel genuinely meaningful.
Gaider also expressed a desire to see the series embrace a darker atmosphere once again, describing that tone as a core part of Dragon Age's identity. While he acknowledged that later entries introduced new ideas and styles, he suggested that a return to the franchise's original blend of political intrigue, moral ambiguity, and mature fantasy themes would resonate strongly with longtime fans. Although he no longer works at BioWare, he said he would welcome the opportunity to revisit Dragon Age if given the chance to help restore that original creative vision.
At present, there is no indication that Gaider is involved in a future Dragon Age project, and his comments represent his personal vision rather than BioWare's official plans. Following the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the franchise's future remains uncertain, but Gaider's remarks have reignited discussion among fans about what direction the series should take next. Whether Dragon Age eventually returns to its darker roots remains to be seen, yet the creator's perspective has once again highlighted the elements that made the original games so beloved.
