PlayStation Dominates AAA Game Sales as New Report Claims Up to 80% of Launch Purchases Happen on PS5
PlayStation 5 continues to strengthen its position as the leading platform for blockbuster single-player games. According to new comments from The Game Business editor-in-chief Christopher Dring, between 75% and 80% of global launch sales for multiplatform AAA single-player games on consoles are made on PlayStation, with Xbox accounting for the remaining share. The figures have sparked widespread discussion across the gaming industry about the growing gap between Sony and Microsoft.

Dring explained that the estimate is based on data gathered from multiple industry sources and reflects the average launch performance of recent AAA releases worldwide. He also clarified that the numbers refer specifically to game sales, not player counts, and exclude first-party PlayStation exclusives, which are unavailable on Xbox. According to Dring, the difference is much smaller for multiplayer games, where Xbox traditionally performs better thanks to its strong online community and the popularity of services like Game Pass.
One of the key reasons behind PlayStation's dominance is its much larger installed user base. Sony has already reported more than 93 million PS5 consoles sold worldwide, while analysts estimate that Xbox Series X|S sales are significantly lower. This hardware advantage gives third-party publishers access to a much larger audience on PlayStation, making the platform increasingly important for major AAA launches.
Although the figures have not been officially published by Sony or Microsoft, they align with broader industry trends showing PlayStation as the preferred destination for narrative-driven blockbuster games. If these estimates accurately reflect current market conditions, they help explain why publishers continue to prioritize PlayStation marketing partnerships and why many of the biggest single-player releases generate the majority of their console sales on Sony's platform.
