Metro 2039 is set to make a major appearance at Gamescom 2026, with developer 4A Games confirming that attendees will get hands-on access to the highly anticipated post-apocalyptic shooter for the first time. The playable demo will be available at the Deep Silver booth during the event in Cologne, giving fans an early opportunity to experience the next chapter in the acclaimed Metro series months before its planned release.

According to 4A Games, the demo will showcase key gameplay mechanics, including exploration, stealth, survival, and intense first-person combat. Players will also get a glimpse of the game's atmospheric environments and narrative direction as they step into the role of the Stranger, a new protagonist returning to the Moscow Metro after years away. The studio says the presentation has been designed to highlight the darker tone and more focused storytelling that define Metro 2039.

The upcoming sequel continues the story several years after the events of Metro Exodus, introducing new factions, dangerous enemies, and a transformed underground world. Built on the latest version of 4A Games' proprietary engine, Metro 2039 promises improved visuals, advanced lighting technology, and detailed environments while maintaining the survival horror elements that helped establish the franchise. The project has been developed across the studio's teams in Kyiv and Malta, with series creator Dmitry Glukhovsky once again collaborating on the story.

Gamescom 2026 runs from August 27 to August 30, making it the first public event where fans can play Metro 2039 before launch. 4A Games has indicated that more gameplay details and developer presentations will accompany the demo throughout the exhibition. With anticipation continuing to build around the long-awaited sequel, the Gamescom showcase is expected to provide the clearest look yet at one of 2027's biggest upcoming shooters.
