Fallout: New Vegas Director Reveals Obsidian’s Secret Method for Balancing RPG Skills

Creating meaningful character builds is one of the biggest challenges in role-playing games, and Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer has now revealed the internal system Obsidian Entertainment uses to prevent players from investing in skills that rarely matter. Speaking on a recent podcast, Sawyer explained that the studio relies on an informal process known as the "Karma Police" to ensure every skill receives enough meaningful opportunities throughout the game.

According to Sawyer, one designer is assigned to review every dialogue, quest, and scripted event during development, tracking how often each skill is used. The goal isn't to make every skill appear the exact same number of times, but to make sure no build feels neglected. Whether players specialize in Speech, Medicine, Science, Barter, or combat abilities, Obsidian wants each choice to unlock unique interactions and rewarding gameplay moments instead of becoming irrelevant halfway through the adventure.

Sawyer emphasized that this philosophy has guided many of Obsidian's most celebrated RPGs, including Fallout: New Vegas. Rather than pursuing perfect mathematical balance, the studio focuses on building player trust by ensuring every character concept remains enjoyable from beginning to end. He also noted that the team redesigned several mechanics in New Vegas—including the removal of the separate Big Guns skill—to avoid situations where players invested heavily in abilities that received little support during the campaign.

The veteran designer believes that memorable RPGs should reward experimentation instead of punishing unconventional builds. By regularly auditing skill checks throughout development, Obsidian aims to give every playstyle its own memorable moments, encouraging players to replay the game with completely different characters. The approach has become one of the defining strengths of Fallout: New Vegas, and many fans consider it a key reason why the game remains one of the most respected role-playing games ever created.
