Capcom knew Onimusha: Way of the Sword would launch during a competitive season, but even the development team didn't expect September 2026 to become one of the busiest months in recent gaming history. In a recent interview, producer Akihito Kadowaki admitted he was "pretty surprised" by the sheer number of blockbuster releases now scheduled around the same time as the long-awaited action game. Despite the fierce competition, however, Capcom remains fully confident in its new samurai adventure.

According to Kadowaki, many publishers announced or adjusted their release dates after Onimusha: Way of the Sword had already secured its September 25, 2026 launch window. As a result, the game now finds itself competing with several major AAA releases arriving throughout the month. Even so, the producer stressed that Capcom has no intention of delaying the project, believing the franchise offers a unique experience that will stand out despite the crowded schedule.

Kadowaki also pointed to the game's distinct identity as one of its biggest strengths. Unlike many modern action titles, Onimusha: Way of the Sword focuses on deliberate sword combat, cinematic storytelling, and a dark fantasy interpretation of feudal Japan. Built using Capcom's RE Engine, the game aims to modernize the classic franchise while remaining faithful to the tactical combat and supernatural atmosphere that made the original series so popular.

As the first brand-new mainline Onimusha game in more than two decades, expectations are understandably high. Capcom believes strong word of mouth and the franchise's loyal fanbase will help the title succeed regardless of how crowded September becomes. With the release date officially locked in for September 25, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is preparing to face one of the year's toughest launch windows—and Capcom appears ready for the challenge.
