Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed a major wave of layoffs at Bungie, with the restructuring affecting most of the Destiny 2 development team and a number of developers working on Marathon. The announcement marks one of the most significant workforce reductions in the studio's history and raises fresh concerns about Bungie's future following several difficult years.

According to Sony, the decision was made after exploring multiple alternatives in an effort to better align Bungie's resources with its long-term priorities. The layoffs come shortly after Destiny 2 received its final major content update, signaling the end of nearly a decade of ongoing live-service development. While Sony did not disclose the exact number of employees affected, multiple reports indicate that hundreds of positions have been eliminated, with the Destiny team taking the hardest hit.

Despite the cuts, Sony emphasized that Marathon remains an important part of PlayStation's future strategy. The company confirmed that development on the extraction shooter will continue, while Bungie also maintains several early-stage projects currently in incubation. Executives thanked the affected employees for their contributions and stated that support programs are being provided to help staff transition to new opportunities.

The restructuring represents another difficult chapter for Bungie, which has experienced multiple rounds of layoffs since joining Sony in 2022. Industry analysts point to declining Destiny 2 engagement, financial pressures, and the challenges of the live-service gaming market as key factors behind the decision. Although Bungie remains one of PlayStation's most recognizable studios, the latest layoffs highlight the growing difficulties facing even the biggest developers as the gaming industry continues to evolve.
