Steam Survey Finds 68.6% of Players Accept AI in Video Games

A new survey of Steam users suggests that most PC players are open to the use of artificial intelligence in game development. According to the results, 68.6% of respondents said they do not oppose AI-powered features in games, although opinions vary depending on how the technology is used. The findings indicate that players are generally more accepting of AI when it supports development rather than replacing human creativity entirely.

The survey found that the most controversial uses of AI involve artwork, voice acting, and story creation. Many participants expressed concern that replacing artists, writers, and voice actors with generative AI could reduce the quality and originality of games. By contrast, respondents were far more comfortable with AI being used for technical tasks such as testing, bug detection, animation support, and gameplay balancing, where it can help developers work more efficiently.

The results reflect a broader debate taking place across the gaming industry. Over the past year, more studios have begun incorporating AI into their production pipelines, while platforms such as Steam now require developers to disclose when generative AI has been used in a game's creation. As AI adoption continues to grow, publishers are facing increasing pressure to be transparent about how the technology is implemented.
