GTA Trilogy Developers Finally Address Disastrous Launch and Admit Players Were Right
The developers behind Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition have publicly reflected on the collection's troubled launch for the first time, acknowledging that players' criticism was justified. Speaking about the controversial 2021 release, Grove Street Games CEO Thomas Williamson admitted the remastered collection launched with serious technical issues and failed to meet fan expectations. At the same time, he noted that internal data showed many players ultimately enjoyed the updated versions after numerous post-launch patches improved the experience.

Williamson explained that the team always understood the enormous expectations surrounding three of Rockstar's most iconic games. According to him, the launch problems overshadowed years of development and became the focus of public discussion. He also acknowledged that many of the complaints raised by players—including bugs, performance issues, and inconsistent visuals—were valid, and said the criticism helped shape the extensive updates released after launch.
Released in November 2021, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition received widespread criticism for technical problems, visual glitches, and controversial character models. Rockstar Games later apologized, released multiple patches, and restored the original PC versions for purchase after strong community backlash. Over time, continued updates significantly improved stability and performance across all platforms.
Although the remastered trilogy remains one of Rockstar's most controversial releases, the developers believe the project improved considerably after launch. Williamson's comments mark the studio's clearest acknowledgment yet that players' concerns were justified, while also highlighting how years of updates helped rebuild confidence in the collection.
