Steam Surpasses PlayStation in Monthly Active Users, New Industry Estimates Suggest
Steam has reportedly overtaken PlayStation in monthly active users, according to new estimates from industry analysts. Based on research by GameDiscoverCo founder Simon Carless, Valve's PC gaming platform is now believed to have between 198 and 210 million monthly active users, with some projections placing the figure above 200 million. By comparison, Sony most recently reported around 125 million monthly active users across the PlayStation ecosystem, making Steam more than 50% larger by this estimate. Valve has not officially confirmed the numbers, so they should be viewed as industry estimates rather than official statistics.

The analysis combines several publicly available data sources, including Valve's Digital Services Act disclosures in Europe, Steam's record-breaking concurrent user counts, and long-term platform growth trends. While Steam stopped publishing official monthly active user figures several years ago, analysts believe the service has continued to expand rapidly thanks to the growing popularity of PC gaming, regular Steam sales, and an ever-expanding game library.
Steam has repeatedly broken its own concurrent player records over the past year, highlighting the platform's continued momentum. Analysts also point to Valve's strong position in digital PC distribution, where Steam remains the dominant storefront for both AAA and indie games. Meanwhile, PlayStation continues to lead the console market, but Sony's active user growth has been more gradual as the company focuses on digital services and first-party releases.
Although the reported figures are not official, they reflect a broader trend of PC gaming becoming an increasingly important part of the global games industry. If the estimates are accurate, Steam has reached a historic milestone, further strengthening Valve's position as the world's largest digital gaming platform by monthly active users.
