Report Claims id Software Pitched New DOOM, Perfect Dark, and Original Projects Before Xbox Layoffs
Before Microsoft's recent wave of layoffs, id Software was reportedly exploring several ambitious game concepts beyond the recently released DOOM: The Dark Ages. According to a new report, the studio had pitched ideas for a multiplayer DOOM experience, a reboot of Perfect Dark, and multiple original projects, including a John Wick-inspired cyberpunk shooter codenamed Fury and a robot-themed sci-fi western. None of these projects were officially approved, and it remains unclear how many have survived following the restructuring.

Sources familiar with the studio's plans say id Software entered a pre-production phase after completing its latest DOOM content, with development teams experimenting with several possible directions for the company's next major title. The reported multiplayer DOOM project would have expanded the franchise beyond its traditional single-player focus, while the proposed Perfect Dark game would have offered the studio an opportunity to apply its expertise in fast-paced first-person shooters to another iconic Xbox franchise.
Those plans were reportedly disrupted when Microsoft's latest Xbox restructuring resulted in significant layoffs across id Software. Multiple reports claim the studio lost a substantial portion of its workforce, including experienced developers from design, engineering, and QA teams. While Microsoft has stated that it remains committed to key franchises such as DOOM, the future of the unannounced concepts is now uncertain.
For now, none of the reported projects have been officially announced by Microsoft, Bethesda, or id Software. As a result, players should treat the information as unconfirmed. Even so, the reports suggest the legendary FPS studio had been considering several ambitious ideas before the layoffs reshaped its development plans, leaving fans wondering which concepts—if any—could eventually become reality.
