John Carmack, co-founder of id Software and one of the creators of DOOM and Quake, has spoken publicly about the recent layoffs that affected the legendary studio. Reacting to Microsoft's restructuring, Carmack admitted he was saddened by the news but argued that emotional reactions alone ignore the commercial realities of game development. In a statement shared on social media, he said that "games need to succeed, not just be beloved" if studios want to survive in an increasingly competitive industry.

Carmack explained that even critically acclaimed games are not guaranteed to be financially successful. According to him, modern games compete not only against other releases but against every form of entertainment that demands players' time and money. He also cautioned against automatically blaming executives for difficult decisions, noting that outsiders rarely have access to the financial data needed to fully understand why layoffs occur. Carmack added that he believes id Software may have become only a marginal business from Microsoft's perspective, despite its legendary reputation.

The veteran programmer also reflected on his earlier optimism following Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda, acknowledging that his previous belief the company would be "a good steward of the brand" has not aged well after the latest round of job cuts. Nevertheless, he stressed that he does not feel anger toward Microsoft, instead describing the situation as a reminder of how difficult it has become to sustain AAA game development in today's market.

Carmack's comments have sparked widespread discussion throughout the gaming industry, with many developers and fans debating the balance between creative success and commercial performance. While the future of id Software remains uncertain after the layoffs, one of its founders believes the long-term survival of any studio ultimately depends on creating games that are not only critically admired but also commercially successful.
