Control Resonant's Brutal Combat Was Inspired by DOOM and Sekiro, Remedy Reveals
Control Resonant is taking the series in a bold new direction, and Remedy Entertainment has now revealed the biggest influences behind its redesigned combat system. According to the developers, the fast-paced action RPG draws direct inspiration from DOOM and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, combining aggressive melee combat with high-speed movement, precise timing, and relentless offensive gameplay. The goal is to create battles that feel more dynamic and rewarding than those in the original Control, while encouraging players to stay on the attack instead of fighting from a distance.

During a recent interview, the development team explained that DOOM inspired the game's constant forward momentum and emphasis on keeping players engaged in the middle of combat, while Sekiro influenced its focus on weapon mastery, timing, and satisfying melee encounters. Rather than relying primarily on firearms, protagonist Dylan Faden wields the supernatural Aberrant, a shapeshifting weapon capable of transforming into multiple forms, allowing players to build their own combat style.
Remedy also confirmed that Control Resonant expands character progression with RPG mechanics, optional bosses, exploration rewards, and customizable abilities. Different weapon forms and unlockable powers can be combined to create unique builds, giving players greater freedom than in the original game. The studio says experimentation is a core design philosophy, with combat designed to reward creativity as much as skill.
With inspiration from two of the most acclaimed action games ever made, Control Resonant is shaping up to be one of Remedy's most ambitious projects. By blending the relentless intensity of DOOM with the precision and rhythm of Sekiro, the studio hopes to deliver a fresh take on the Control universe while giving players a faster, deeper, and more satisfying combat experience.
