Dead Space Creator Glen Schofield Announces Retirement — "It's Time to Step Away After 35 Years"
Glen Schofield, the legendary creator of Dead Space and one of the industry's most influential game directors, has officially announced his retirement after more than 35 years in game development. In an emotional farewell message shared on LinkedIn, Schofield said the time had come to step away from day-to-day game development, describing his career as an incredible journey filled with unforgettable experiences.

Schofield's career spans some of the biggest franchises in gaming history. After working on series such as Gex and Legacy of Kain at Crystal Dynamics, he joined EA, where he created the original Dead Space—a survival horror masterpiece that went on to become one of the genre's defining franchises. He later co-founded Sledgehammer Games, helping direct Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and Call of Duty: WWII, before launching Striking Distance Studios and leading development of The Callisto Protocol.
In his farewell message, Schofield thanked his colleagues, family, and millions of players who supported his games throughout the decades. Reflecting on today's challenging gaming industry, he acknowledged that "times are tough right now," but expressed optimism for the future, saying he believes "the future ahead is really, really bright." He also described himself as fortunate to have witnessed one of the greatest periods of creativity in video game history.
Schofield's retirement marks the end of an era for survival horror. Although he previously expressed interest in returning to the Dead Space franchise, his latest announcement suggests he is now ready to leave full-time development behind. His influence, however, will continue to be felt through the games he helped create, with Dead Space remaining one of the most celebrated horror franchises ever made and a lasting legacy of his decades-long career.
