ZeniMax Online Leadership Steps Down After Xbox Layoffs — Elder Scrolls Online Enters a New Era

ZeniMax Online Studios is undergoing another major leadership shake-up following the latest wave of Xbox layoffs. The studio confirmed that several senior executives, including Studio Head Jo Burba, Executive Producer Susan Kath, Game Director Rich Lambert, and Technical Director Bill Diaz, will leave their leadership roles as the company transitions to a new management team made up of longtime Elder Scrolls Online veterans.

According to internal communications, the outgoing leadership will remain at the studio for the next few months to ensure a smooth handover before officially stepping aside. The restructuring follows Microsoft's recent layoffs that heavily impacted ZeniMax Online Studios, with more than 200 employees reportedly affected as part of Xbox's wider cost-cutting initiative. Despite the leadership changes, the studio has stressed that The Elder Scrolls Online will continue receiving support and that development of future content remains ongoing.

The transition marks another turbulent chapter for the ESO developer. Over the past two years, the studio has faced the cancellation of its long-running MMO project, multiple rounds of layoffs, and several changes in executive leadership. Nevertheless, Microsoft and ZeniMax have expressed confidence that promoting experienced internal developers will help maintain continuity for one of the industry's longest-running MMORPGs.

While fans have understandably expressed concern following the latest restructuring, The Elder Scrolls Online remains one of Microsoft's most successful live-service games, generating a dedicated player base more than a decade after its launch. With a new leadership team preparing to take over, the studio now faces the challenge of guiding ESO through its next phase while rebuilding stability after one of the most significant organizational changes in its history.
