The Coalition has shared new details about Dominic "Dom" Santiago's past in Gears of War: E-Day, offering fans a deeper look at the beloved soldier long before the events of the original trilogy. Set 14 years before the first Gears of War, the prequel explores Dom's life immediately after the Pendulum Wars, revealing how his military experience and personal relationships shaped the hero players would later come to know.

According to the developers, Dom and Marcus Fenix are no longer portrayed as the battle-hardened veterans seen in earlier games. Instead, E-Day presents them as younger, more vulnerable soldiers still carrying the emotional scars of the recently concluded Pendulum Wars. Dom is described as a devoted family man whose loyalty, compassion, and sense of duty become central themes of the story as humanity faces the terrifying emergence of the Locust Horde for the very first time.

The Coalition explained that exploring Dom's background was essential to strengthening the emotional core of the game.
