Solo Composer Spends Six Years Building Epic RTS Chronages, Blending Dragons, Magic, and Modern Warfare
One of the most ambitious indie strategy games in recent years has finally stepped into the spotlight. Chronages, a hybrid RTS and 4X strategy game, has been officially announced after six years of solo development by composer-turned-game developer Andrei Bely. Built entirely by one person, the project combines medieval fantasy with modern military technology, allowing dragons, mages, tanks, and mortars to fight side by side on the same battlefield.

According to the developer, Chronages draws inspiration from legendary strategy franchises including Civilization, Heroes of Might and Magic, and Total War. Players begin with nothing more than a campfire in the Stone Age, gradually advancing through multiple technological eras while expanding their empire in real time. Unlike traditional 4X games, Chronages lets players directly command armies during battles, combining empire management with large-scale RTS combat.
One of the game's most distinctive features is its unique setting, where magic and technology evolve together instead of replacing one another. Powerful spellcasters can fight alongside armored vehicles and artillery, while mythical creatures such as dragons coexist with advanced military units. The developer says this approach is intended to create a constantly evolving battlefield where players can experiment with unconventional army compositions and strategies throughout the campaign.
Although Chronages is still in active development, its first reveal has already attracted considerable attention from strategy fans thanks to its ambitious scope and impressive visuals for a solo-developed project. The game is currently available to wishlist on Steam, with a beta planned before launch and competitive multiplayer expected to arrive later in development. If the final release fulfills its ambitious vision, Chronages could become one of the most remarkable independent RTS games to emerge in recent years.
