Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled Team Criticizes AI-Assisted Coding, Says Quality Comes First
The developers behind Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled have publicly criticized the growing use of AI-assisted "vibe coding" in fan development projects, arguing that relying too heavily on generative AI can lead to poorly structured and difficult-to-maintain software. The comments were made shortly after the team officially unveiled its upcoming native PC recompilation of the Nintendo 64 classic.
According to one of the project's lead developers, the team decided to announce Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled earlier than planned because another group was reportedly working on a competing recompilation built largely with AI-generated code. The developer claimed that this competing project was progressing in "a very poor" direction and said the team wanted players to know that an experienced group with years of Donkey Kong 64 reverse-engineering expertise was creating a high-quality alternative.
The developers emphasized that their recompilation is being built through traditional software engineering practices rather than depending on AI to generate large portions of the codebase. They argue that experienced programmers who fully understand the game's original systems are better equipped to produce stable, maintainable software with fewer long-term issues. While the team acknowledged that AI can be a useful productivity tool in some situations, they believe it should complement human expertise—not replace it.
Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled aims to deliver the definitive PC version of the 1999 platformer, featuring high frame rates, 4K resolution support, widescreen gameplay, reduced input latency, and mod compatibility. As with other recompilation projects, players will need to supply their own legally obtained copy of the original game, since the project does not include Nintendo's copyrighted assets. While the debate over AI-generated code continues across the industry, the developers hope their project demonstrates that deep technical knowledge and careful craftsmanship remain the foundation of high-quality game preservation.
