In a landmark move for the gaming industry, Fenris Creations has officially open-sourced Carbon, the game engine framework that has powered EVE Online for more than 23 years. The technology is now freely available on GitHub, giving developers, researchers, and hobbyists access to one of the most sophisticated MMO engine frameworks ever created. Most of the released code is licensed under the permissive MIT License, allowing both personal and commercial use.

The public release includes more than two dozen core modules, covering graphics, rendering, physics, pathfinding, animation, audio, networking, scripting, and other foundational technologies. Among the most notable components are Trinity, the rendering engine responsible for EVE Online's visuals, and Destiny, the simulation system that manages large-scale movement and physics during the game's famous fleet battles involving thousands of players. While the engine framework is now open source, the EVE Online game client, server code, and live-service infrastructure remain proprietary.

According to Fenris Creations, the decision is intended to promote transparency, preserve decades of engineering knowledge, and encourage community collaboration. By opening the engine to the public, the studio hopes developers will contribute optimizations, security improvements, new tools, and innovative features that can benefit both the wider game development community and the EVE ecosystem. The move also allows aspiring programmers to study production-quality code from one of the longest-running MMORPGs in history.

The release marks the completion of a plan first announced in 2024, when the company revealed its intention to gradually make Carbon publicly available. Developers can now inspect, modify, fork, and build upon the engine through its official GitHub repository, making Carbon one of the few mature MMO frameworks to transition to open source after decades of active development. While this doesn't mean anyone can recreate EVE Online itself, it represents an important milestone for game preservation and open-source software, giving the development community access to technology that has powered one of gaming's most enduring virtual worlds.
