Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 writer Bartosz Sztybor has cautioned fans to avoid becoming too emotionally attached to the new cast, hinting that the upcoming season will deliver an even more dramatic and emotionally devastating story than its predecessor. Speaking during Anime Expo 2026, Sztybor compared the first season to a Michael Bay blockbuster, while describing the sequel as being closer to a Martin Scorsese crime drama.
According to Sztybor, the new season shifts away from the explosive, high-octane tone of the original anime in favor of a more grounded and character-driven narrative. Rather than focusing primarily on large-scale action, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 explores themes such as family, obsession, revenge, and legacy, placing greater emphasis on the emotional consequences of life in Night City. The writer also joked that viewers "shouldn't get too emotionally attached" to the characters—a statement that immediately reminded fans of the heartbreaking events that defined the first season.
The upcoming anime introduces a completely new cast, including Weak Kingsley, a legendary former edgerunner forced to live without cyberware, D, a revenge-driven nomad, Roman Carax, a filmmaker documenting Night City's brutal reality, and Talia Yang, a member of the Maelstrom gang. As with the original series, the story is designed as a standalone narrative rather than a continuation of David Martinez's journey, allowing newcomers to experience the anime without prior knowledge of Season 1.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in Fall 2026, once again produced by Studio Trigger in collaboration with CD Projekt Red.
