Bethesda Says Change Is Essential to Secure the Studio's Future
Bethesda Game Studios has acknowledged that adapting to new challenges will be critical for its long-term success. In a recent interview, studio director Todd Howard reflected on Bethesda's evolution, explaining that the company has learned valuable lessons from recent projects and now sees the need to refine its approach while preserving the open-world RPG experience that made its games famous. His comments come as the studio continues development of The Elder Scrolls VI following the release of Starfield.

Howard noted that experimentation has played an important role in Bethesda's growth, but also admitted that the studio wants to return to the strengths that defined classics such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 3. According to him, future projects will focus more heavily on player freedom, exploration, and handcrafted world design while taking advantage of improvements made through the new Creation Engine 3.
The comments arrive during a challenging period for Microsoft's gaming division, with Xbox undergoing significant restructuring that has affected Bethesda and other ZeniMax studios. Despite these organizational changes, Bethesda has emphasized that development of its biggest franchises remains a top priority, including The Elder Scrolls VI, which is currently the studio's primary project.
While Bethesda has not revealed new gameplay or a release window for The Elder Scrolls VI, the studio believes evolving its development philosophy is necessary to meet modern player expectations. If those plans succeed, Bethesda hopes its next generation of RPGs will combine the depth of its classic titles with the technology and production values expected from today's biggest game releases.
