Exanima Developers Reveal New Save System and Major Combat Overhaul Ahead of Version 1.0
Developer Bare Mettle Entertainment has unveiled two of the biggest features planned for the next major Exanima update: a completely redesigned save system and a substantial overhaul of the game's signature physics-based combat. The changes were outlined in the studio's latest Coffee Diary, where the developers explained that both systems are intended to improve accessibility without sacrificing the game's renowned challenge.

One of the most significant additions is a brand-new checkpoint-style save system. Instead of relying solely on the game's traditional restrictive saving mechanics, players will activate special save points scattered throughout the world. According to Bare Mettle, the new approach aims to reduce frustration while preserving the tension and high-stakes exploration that define Exanima. The developers stressed that the system has been carefully designed to maintain the game's survival-focused atmosphere rather than making it substantially easier.
Combat is also receiving a comprehensive overhaul. The team has rebuilt major parts of the character physics, refined movement and footwork, improved collision handling, and redesigned the combat AI to produce smarter, more varied opponents. Enemies will better understand weapon characteristics, react more effectively to environmental hazards, switch intelligently between multiple targets, and employ more deliberate tactics instead of relying on repetitive attack patterns. These improvements build on the extensive physics and AI upgrades introduced in recent development updates.
The revised save mechanics and combat improvements are part of Bare Mettle's broader roadmap toward Exanima 1.0. Alongside these systems, the developers continue to refine performance, expand the game's world, and enhance AI behavior, emphasizing that the goal is to deliver the most polished version of Exanima yet. While no release date for Version 1.0 has been announced, the studio says these foundational changes represent some of the final major features before the long-awaited full launch.
