Japanese publishing and entertainment giant KADOKAWA has confirmed that 154 employees have applied for its previously announced voluntary early retirement program, marking a significant step in the company's ongoing restructuring efforts. The program, first announced in May 2026, targeted employees aged 45 and older with at least five years of service, offering enhanced retirement packages and optional career transition support.

According to KADOKAWA's official announcement, the participating employees will leave the company on July 31, 2026. As a result of the program, the company expects to record an extraordinary loss of approximately ¥5.4 billion during the first quarter of its fiscal year ending March 2027. Despite the short-term financial impact, KADOKAWA estimates the restructuring will reduce annual personnel costs by roughly ¥1.7 billion, with around ¥1.1 billion in savings expected during the remaining eight months of the current fiscal year.

The voluntary retirement initiative forms part of KADOKAWA's broader strategy to build a leaner and more efficient organization following a significant decline in operating profit during the previous fiscal year. Rather than implementing mandatory layoffs, the company chose a voluntary program that included additional retirement compensation and outplacement assistance for employees seeking new career opportunities.

KADOKAWA stated that the restructuring is intended to strengthen its long-term profitability while continuing to invest in its core businesses, including publishing, anime, gaming, and digital entertainment. The company plans to update its financial outlook after reviewing the impact of the restructuring alongside its first-quarter results. While the departure of 154 employees represents a major organizational change, KADOKAWA says the move is designed to create a more sustainable operating structure and support future growth across its expanding global content business.
