Danganronpa 2×2 Delayed to Early 2027 as Spike Chunsoft Expands New Alternate Story
Spike Chunsoft has officially delayed Danganronpa 2×2 from its planned 2026 release window to early 2027, explaining that the extra development time will allow the team to further polish the game and expand its ambitious new content. The announcement was made during the publisher's Anime Expo 2026 panel, where developers also revealed new details about the game's alternate storyline and updated exploration systems.

One of the biggest reveals is Slayhem Mode, a completely new scenario that exists alongside the remastered version of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. Rather than simply retelling the original story, Slayhem introduces an alternate chain of events featuring different victims, culprits, murder methods, and class trials. According to Spike Chunsoft, the new scenario contains approximately 20% more content than the enhanced Original Mode and was co-written under the supervision of series creator Kazutaka Kodaka.
The developers also showcased a major overhaul of the game's exploration. The original side-scrolling map has been replaced by a fully 3D World Map, allowing players to freely navigate Jabberwock Island or instantly fast travel between previously visited locations. In addition, every character portrait has been redrawn with new artwork, giving the cast a modern visual presentation while preserving the distinctive style of the original game.
Producer Shohei Sakakibara apologized to fans for the delay, stating that the team remains committed to delivering the best possible version of the game. Danganronpa 2×2 is now scheduled to launch in early 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. With a fully reimagined presentation, an expanded alternate storyline, and significantly enhanced exploration, the project is shaping up to be far more than a traditional remaster.
