Google Play has announced the launch of its first-ever Indie Games Fund for Africa, committing $1 million in equity-free funding to help independent game studios grow their businesses and reach players worldwide. The initiative targets developers across 32 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, where the gaming industry is expanding rapidly despite limited access to investment.

Under the program, 10 independent studios will each receive between $50,000 and $200,000, along with technical support from Google Play specialists and mentorship from industry experts. Unlike venture capital investments, the funding is equity-free, allowing developers to retain full ownership of their companies and intellectual property while receiving financial assistance to scale their projects.

To qualify, applicants must be legally registered in one of the 32 eligible African countries, employ fewer than 50 people, and have already released at least one mobile, PC, or console game. Selected studios will also commit to publishing their games on Google Play and participating in the Google Play Pass program on a non-exclusive basis for two years. Applications are open until July 31, 2026, with the winning studios expected to be announced in September.

Google says the new fund is designed to address one of the biggest obstacles facing African game developers: limited access to early-stage financing. By combining grants with hands-on technical guidance and business mentorship, the company hopes to help local studios expand internationally while showcasing original African stories to a global audience. The initiative marks Google's first dedicated games investment program for Africa and reflects the company's broader commitment to supporting the continent's growing digital economy.
