League of Legends Classic Officially Announced as Riot Brings Back the Game’s Golden Era
Riot Games has officially unveiled League of Legends Classic, a brand-new game mode designed to recreate the early years of the legendary MOBA. After weeks of datamining leaks and community speculation, the developer confirmed that the nostalgic project is real, promising veteran players the chance to relive one of gaming's most iconic experiences. A full gameplay reveal is scheduled for the MSI 2026 Grand Final on July 11.

Although Riot has yet to reveal every feature, early information suggests that League of Legends Classic will bring back the original Summoner's Rift, classic champion models, old rune and mastery systems, and legendary items that disappeared from the game years ago. Dataminers have also discovered references to around 60 classic champions, many of which are expected to appear with their original abilities before major reworks transformed them into their modern versions.
One of the biggest questions surrounding the project is which version of League of Legends Riot intends to recreate. Developers have hinted that Seasons 1, 2, and 4 are all under consideration, while some reports suggest the Classic mode could evolve over time by rotating between different eras of the game's history. Riot has not yet confirmed whether League of Legends Classic will become a permanent addition to the client or launch as a limited-time experience.
The announcement has generated massive excitement across the League of Legends community, especially among longtime fans eager to revisit the slower-paced gameplay, classic mechanics, and nostalgic atmosphere that helped define the game's early success. With millions of players having experienced League over the past 17 years, League of Legends Classic could become one of Riot Games' biggest launches in recent years. More details, including gameplay footage and a potential release window, are expected during the MSI 2026 Finals on July 11.
