Germany's ambitious effort to preserve video game history has come to an abrupt end after the Internationale Computerspielesammlung (ICS)—widely regarded as the world's largest publicly accessible video game archive—was forced to shut down following the expiration of government funding. The project had cataloged more than 60,000 games, but its future is now uncertain after officials declined to renew its €1.5 million financial support.
Founded to safeguard interactive entertainment for future generations, the archive collected physical games, digital releases, development materials, and historical documentation from across the industry. The initiative aimed to provide researchers, historians, and the public with access to one of the most comprehensive gaming collections ever assembled.
