"Movement Is Life": Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Developers Reveal New Combat Details
Developer Crystal Dynamics has shared an in-depth look at the combat system in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, explaining that the remake is built around one central philosophy: constant movement. During a recent developer presentation, the team revealed how Lara Croft's iconic acrobatic fighting style has been modernized while preserving the fast-paced feel of the original Tomb Raider.

According to the developers, Lara's signature dual pistols once again serve as her primary weapons, but combat now emphasizes mobility over standing still. Players are encouraged to chain together dodges, dives, wall jumps, rolls, and aerial flips while firing at enemies. Successfully damaging opponents fills a new Focus meter, which can be activated to briefly slow time, allowing Lara to perform cinematic acrobatic attacks and precision shots during intense encounters.
The team also demonstrated encounters with dangerous wildlife, including Velociraptors and the legendary Tyrannosaurus rex, explaining that every battle is designed to reward quick reactions and environmental awareness rather than simply absorbing damage. Crystal Dynamics says enemy behavior has been rebuilt to encourage aggressive movement, forcing players to constantly reposition instead of relying on cover or repetitive shooting tactics. The goal is to blend the classic feel of the 1996 adventure with modern third-person action mechanics.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled to launch on February 12, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Alongside its redesigned combat, the Unreal Engine 5 remake promises expanded exploration, updated puzzles, modern controls, and enhanced storytelling while remaining faithful to Lara Croft's original adventure. By placing movement at the heart of every encounter, Crystal Dynamics hopes to create a combat system that feels both nostalgic and fresh for a new generation of players.
